Amundsen's Boat

A Novel

Sean Freeman

"Freeman's Nordic noir debut... begins with a jolt of cold dread... Through robust criminal world-building, a sharp, stylish thriller emerges, where historical reverence tangles with Hollywood sleaze..." — BookLIfe

In 1972, Oslo Inspector Per Steindal is thrust into an international mystery when the disfigured body of a young actress is discovered aboard Roald Amundsen’s historic ship, Gjøa, recently repatriated from San Francisco. A roguish former national ski racer, Steindal is tasked with escorting the remains back to the hip and happening City by the Bay. There he is paired with the formidable veteran Inspector Lucy Chan, a single mom grappling with her place in the male-dominated police force and her fiancé’s imprisonment as a POW at the Hanoi Hilton. When one murder turns to three, threatening to overwhelm their investigation, Steindal and Chan concoct an elaborate ruse to draw out the killer, turning a Tenderloin dive bar into a stage set, replete with jazz band, movie quality sound, lighting, special effects, and a full cast of characters—cops, bikers, art forgers, smut peddlers, and a famous movie star.
